This is my executive summary:
This paper aims to reveal the scope of the challenge presented by the debate over industrial meat production in the United States. Although the debate covers many issues, this paper will cover three main areas impacted by decisions made around the topic of industrial meat production: 1) Animal Rights Ethics 2) Environmental Ethics 3) The Current Business Paradigm. The purpose of this discussion is to lay out the most relevant and prudent information from each space so that we can approach the issue in a holistic fashion. The goal of taking a holistic approach is to understand the scope of all those implicated by potential changes made to policy around industrial meat production in the United States. What would happen if industrial meat production was suddenly cut in half due to a decision made around animal rights ethics? Who would be impacted by a sudden policy change to increase the industrial meat production in the United States? How would the day-to-day lives of small business owners or families change?
Once this paper lays out the scope of the challenge from these three main angles, it will employ theory from Simple Rules – How to Thrive in a Complex World, and offer potential rules for a more balanced way forward. The paper will suggest that these simple rules be implemented in a policy change by those people in the business of industrial meat production.
